Fluorspar is a crystalline mineral used as a substitute flux for calcium, and as an opacifier to give cloudy or opalescent effects. Fluorspar has a lower fluxing temperature than other calcium compounds, and can be used as a substitute for whiting/calcium carbonate to promote more fusible glazes. Insoluble in water, it should be used at 100 mesh or finer, or it can cause mottling and pin-holing in glazes.
