CAC Terra Sigillata

Clay Art Center Terra Sigillatas are available in three distinct formulations. Our Classic Terra Sigillatas are based on a selection of different kaolins to achieve different colors. Our Colored Terra Sigillatas are formulated using our OM4 Terra Sig and specially selected colorants to yield a range of subtle colors. Clay Art Center has a new line of Mica Infused Terra Sigillata that brings iridescent sparkle and shine to your pots. Our Mica Infused Terra Sigillatas ares available in metallic opaque colors or interference “blushing” colors.

Terra Sigillata (or Terra Sig) translate to “Earth Seal”. Terra Sigillata is a ultra-fine fine slip created by a process of separation. We mill specially selected clays using a ball mill and water until the particles are extremely small and fine. Deflocculant is added and the mixture is allowed to settle for up to 48 hours. The fluid left on top after settling is the terra sigillata which is then decanted and bottled for use.

Apply at least 3 layers of Clay Art Center Terra Sigillatas to your bone dry piece.  Allow each layer to fully dry before the next coat. Burnish/Polish the surface with your hands or a soft cloth which will shine the surface of the Terra Sigillata to a high gloss. This smooth surface is ideal for many different decoration techniques. After your piece if fired you will be left with a smooth and mildly water resistant coating. Terra Sigillata is not considered food safe due to it’s surface characteristics and is also not waterproof.

May be fired to any temp but the polished surface will start to break down and lose it’s shine when fired over Cone 04.
