MAYCO POTTERY CASCADES – PC602 – WHITE CASCADE

$6.95$20.00

Pottery Cascadeā„¢ are moving, flowing glazes, commonly used under or over other glazes to create reactions and movement. Can be applied randomly or uniformly, brushed or dabbed on with a sponge. The colored cascades ā€“ white and amber ā€“ add a tinge of color to glazes with which they are used. Use Pottery Cascadeā„¢ as a flux with Elementsā„¢ to create movement in the colors. Great visual effects are create when added under, over or in-between Elementsā„¢ or Elementā„¢ Chunkies. Cascades are perfect for the low fire designer seeking to create the looks achieved at higher temperatures. Their variability insures that no two designs will be exactly alike. Pottery Cascadeā„¢ are commonly used by low-fire designers who seek to simulate effects of higher fire glazes. With the disappearance of leaded glazes from the markets, Cascades have been used to create the flowing movement lead used to provide.
General Use
Apply 1-2 coats with a brush or sponge, under or over another glaze. You can influence the directionĀ of the flow or create a pattern by how you apply the glazes. Allow to dry thoroughly. Fire to cones 06/05 – can be fired to mid-range temps, check side of bottle for more info.Ā To prevent the glaze from running off your vertical pieces do not apply Pottery Cascades to the bottom third of the piece.
Helpful Hints

  • Avoid applying Pottery Cascadeā„¢ on lower third of piece as glaze will move.
  • PC601 Clear Cascade is the most fluid of the Cascade products, requiring care inĀ application.
  • PC602 White Cascade moves the least.
  • Pottery Cascadeā„¢ are luster compatible.

Application Recommendations
The following application recommendations are based upon the original product development intentĀ and use for the product. Information on alternative application methods is listed in the section “UsageĀ Variations and FAQ’s”.

  • Shake for 5-6 seconds before use.
  • Dispense glaze onto a palette (tile, plate, etc.) and apply with yourĀ brush or decorating accessory of choice (sponge, stamp, etc.).
  • We advise against dipping your brushĀ directly into the jar to avoid contamination, particularly if you are using one brush to layer PotteryĀ Cascades over other glazes.
  • We recommend that you do not apply Pottery Cascadeā„¢ to the lowest third of your piece as these glazes WILL move.Ā Vertical pieces require more attention to this detail than horizontal pieces.
  • Pottery Cascadeā„¢ glazes were designed to mature at a shelf cone 06 (999Ā° C). Make sure the glaze hasĀ dried thoroughly prior to firing. A medium ramp/firing rate is recommended (250Ā°F per hour).

Product Usage & FAQs

Q: What tips do you have for applying Pottery Cascadeā„¢?

A: Apply PC-602 White Cascade and PC-603 Amber Cascade with a brush in 1-3 coats. Can beĀ dabbed on at random, evenly or unevenly to create different flow patterns using a sea wool sponge, forĀ example. PC-601 Clear Cascade should be brushed on as you would apply a glaze. Apply 1-2 brushedĀ coats over or under a non-toxic glaze. Do not go below the halfway point of the piece, as the PC-601Ā Clear Cascade flows the most. Pottery Cascadeā„¢ can be applied between color, underneath and over colorsĀ for different effects.

Other conditions that could affect the performance of Pottery Cascadeā„¢ include:

  • The order in which the Pottery Cascadeā„¢ is applied to your piece.
  • Shape and surface textures on your piece.
  • The nature of the glazes Pottery Cascadeā„¢ is used with. More fluid glazes, such as Elementsā„¢, Elementsā„¢ Chunkies and Crystal glazes will perform differently than non-moving glaze, such as FoundationsĀ® Opaque or Stroke and CoatĀ®.
  • Firing temperature, ramp rate and a soaking period may enhance the flow patterns.

Q: How do the “personalities” of each Pottery Cascadeā„¢ differ?

A: PC-601 Clear Cascade produces a more flowing effect, and allows the color of the base glaze toĀ show through. It can also alter your original color, creating a new color. It will form runs or you canĀ direct the runs when you apply the product. PC-602 White Cascade intermingles with the other glazesĀ being used, introducing pure white to the colors you are using, blending with the color. PC-602 WhiteĀ Cascade has a minimum movement and will stay in the pattern that you apply it in. The degree ofĀ movement of PC-603 Amber Cascade is moderate and allows the color of the base glaze to showĀ through.

Q: Can Pottery Cascadeā„¢ be used by itself?

A: Yes, Pottery Cascadeā„¢ can be used alone.

Q: Is Pottery Cascadeā„¢ over-glaze (luster) compatible?

A: Yes, but always test first before undertaking a major project.
